Gastrointestinal disorders such as Fructose and Lactose intolerances are in fact more common than you might think, which is why testing, diagnosing and treating these ailments is also much easier than you might think.
Hydrogen Breath Testing (HBT) is a simple, non-invasive test used to accurately diagnose disorders such as Fructose and Lactose intolerances. Testing is performed after a minimal period of fasting (usually between 8 and 12 hours), with the procedure itself taking about 2-3 hours. With no known side-effects, other than the potential reproduction of some or all of your symptoms for a short period, HBT has proven to be a very popular and effective diagnostic tool for patients experiencing the following symptoms:
- Abdominal pain
- Flatulence and/or diarrhoea
The HBT requires the patient to take a base reading of hydrogen levels in his/her breath, after which a small amount of lactose or fructose will be given. Following this, the patient is then required to take further readings every 30 minutes for two hours.
It’s important to remember there are a number of gastrointestinal disorders that cause similar symptoms, so be sure to discuss all of your concerns with a health professional to ensure a fructose or lactose test is right for you.
